Ginger has been known for having a myriad of different benefits, everything from soothing an upset stomach, weight loss, osteoarthritis, and lowering blood sugar among others. Ginger is an ancient spice and I’m sure you or someone you know has vouched for it in some way, perhaps even for one of the aforementioned benefits above. However, a lesser-known benefit to it is that it can be a powerful tool for muscle pain relief.
Ginger has its origins tracing back to Maritime Southeast Asia and was one of the first spices ever exported out of Asia. It quickly became popular in several countries around the world as its versatility made it a staple in many cultures. One of these uses that is being highlighted in this article is its ability to soothe muscle spasms, soreness, and pain. The Journal of Pain published a study showing that a daily dose of ginger eased exercise induced muscle pain in 74 healthy adults. https://www.jpain.org/article/S1526-5900(09)00915-8/fulltext
Both raw and heated ginger were used in the treatment study, neither one outperformed the other. Both were highly effective for the treatment of muscle pain at a dose of 2g/day for 11 consecutive days. So, next time you’re leaving the gym and thinking about how much that ice bath is going to suck or how you don’t feel like using that heating pad, give a couple of grams of ginger a try! It might just do the trick
